Five Reasons Why Island Park is a Great Place to Take Your Dog
Where is your favourite place across the Central Plains to take your furry friends? There are many gems to choose from and one of them, without a doubt, is Island Park. Here are five reasons why we think Island Park is a great place for you and your dog to go!
WALKING PATH
We all know walking your dog is a great bonding experience. At Island Park, there are many twists and turns for you to enjoy and some convenient paths to follow. Has your pup taken a look at the sundial or the deer pen, or the tennis courts? (Keep in mind, you must keep your dog on leash while you are exploring the island.)
CRESCENT LAKE / THE PONDS
We are big on beautiful views and there is plenty to watch on Crescent Lake. For example, we saw someone in a canoe earlier today, and our dog seemed very intrigued! (We wouldn't let them head out into the water, but let them dream!)
There are also convenient benches for you to sit on all around the park when you need to take a break. With the weather we've had lately, this would be a great choice!
BIRD (AND SQUIRREL) WATCHING
Make sure you have a good hold on your leash! If you are looking for a place to practice keeping your dog's attention, the island will work. If your dog can remain calm while the critters run (or fly!) around, there is a lot to see! It's also very important to not let your dog go one-on-one with the many geese hanging around – but they are fun to watch.
DISC WATCHING
Note to any dogs that read this and want to get excited about flying discs: they are not to be chased or chewed! However, if you're looking for a unique path to take, try following along with the disc golf path. You can see the Rotary Club of Portage board near hole one to find out more. There are some people who also play disc golf while walking their dog although it's considerably more difficult. Can't really do that with regular golf.
FREE DOGGY BAGS
This might sound like a weird reason, but hear us out. Last but not least, it's up to all of us to ensure we keep our green spaces clean. Free doggy bags help greatly with that! And the garbage cans that are relatively close by as well? Absolutely perfect.
So, there you have it. Six reasons why Island Park is a great place for you and your pup. Where are some of your favourite spots in Portage la Prairie? What about MacGregor and other smaller towns? Let us know and maybe that will be the next place we'll go! We'd love to highlight your favourite spots so they can be our favourite spots, too. Thanks for reading!
